Notes Josiah Pettingill was born November 16, 1840. His family came to La Crosse when he was 15 years old. Mr. Pettingill served in public office as County Clerk, Chairman of the Town Board and was appointed Postmaster of La Crosse by President McKinley.

Josiah and his wife Eunice had five children: Charles, Claud, Maud, Grace, and Johnnie.

Claud married Lillian Annin (painter).

Grace married James Hogan. After James' death, Grace married Gysbert Van Steenwyk.
