Notes In 1917, the Tribune purchased the Leader-Press, its only surviving rival, for $100,000. Ronald Gelatt, editor and publisher of the Leader-Press, came on as the Tribune's publisher and Brayton remained as the Tribune's editor. From 1917 to 1944, the Tribune used the name La Crosse Tribune and Leader-Press, acknowledging the combination of the two papers.
