Notes Stoddard was a Yale-educated lawyer from an influential East Coast family. He gained celebrity status for living with the Seneca as a friend of the great orator, Chief Red Jacket. An imposing and influential figure, Stoddard was an early entrepreneur and first mayor of La Crosse. He promoted construction of a railroad from Milwaukee, through La Crosse into southern Minnesota.
