Notes |
Augusta Henrietta Dobe was born to George and Louise Krause Dobe on April 7, 1886 in La Crosse, WI. She attended public school until she graduated from 8th grade, after which she began attending Snow's College to study as a seamstress. In 1909, she opened her own dressmaking shop and employed 6 to 8 women, including her own sister Minnie. Augusta was known for her ability to make any garment requested by a customer, even if it was based off a sketch or brief description. While she also made regular garments and made wardrobes for college-bound young women, many of Augusta's clients were well-to-do women such as Frank Hixon's daughters. Wealthier clients often had elaborate gowns made by Augusta and her seamstresses, which they then wore to social events. Augusta's work often incorporated both machine stitching and hand stitching, and because of her talent, she was very prosperous as a dressmaker. Not just talented at sewing, Augusta had a love for music, buying a piano and taking lessons as a young woman. Augusta soon became engaged to a local grocer named Arthur Julius Beutler. Using her expertise in dressmaking, she made her own wedding dress, which she wore on their wedding on June 10, 1914. The couple eventually had four children together: Theodore, Arthur Julius Jr., Robert Paul, and Elizabeth Marie or "Betty." After the wedding, Augusta left dressmaking and music behind to fulfill her duties as a mother and housewife. Though she no longer worked as a dressmaker, she attended a sewing club with several other women from the First Lutheran Church. The women met monthly, working on their sewing projects and selling them in the church bazaar to raise money for the parish. This sewing club was one of Augusta's greatest pleasures in life, and she attended for many years before her death on June 21, 1942. |
