Notes |
Joseph B. Funke was born to Joseph and Elizabeth Funke on January 18, 1856 in Reads Landing, Minnesota. He attended the Bryant-Stratton business college at St. Paul and began his business career by working on floating rafts between Reads Landing and Winona. He later took a position as a clerk in a general store at Eagle, Wisconsin before taking over management of a general merchandising business. In 1880, Funke moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin at 24 years old and purchased his first interest in wholesale candy manufacturing with Jacob Schreiber. After five years, Funke purchased the interests of his partner and conducted the factory with his father and two brothers. Funke's premium candy manufacturing business remained at 101 State Street until the time of his death. Funke was also appointed as president of La Crosse vocational school's board in 1912, which office he held continuously except for the years 1926 and 1927. Funke died in La Crosse on January 3rd, 1930, where he was recognized as a "father of the city" and the only thirty-third degree mason in western Wisconsin. |
