Gerhard Hantke came to America with his parents at age 3 to escape the German monetary inflation of 1923 (money became almost worth less and people were starving). The family cared for a relative, Carl Fischer, in Onalaska, then moved to La Crosse after his death in 1925. Gerhard graduated from Central High School in La Crosse in 1938. He began college, majoring in Chemistry at both UW-La Crosse and UW-Maidson, but had to quit to earn a living fo rhis parents during the Depression. He evenutally found work with the Trane Company circa 1945 and remained there for 40 years. He began printing in 1934, and was encouraged by his English professor Emerson Wulling, continuing to print until close to his death in 1990. |
