Alice Green was born on January 31, 1883. In 1905, she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin. She did graduate studies at the University of Chicago. She came to La Crosse at the age of 33 and worked as a high school English and drama teacher. In 1921, she married Frank Pennell Hixon, son of Gideon Cooley and Ellen Jane Pennell Hixon. Alice was active in the civic scene of La Crosse, becoming the first president of the La Crosse chapter of the League of Women Voters in 1924. After moving to Lake Forest, IL in 1925, she founded the Lake Forest League of Women Voters in 1926. She served as both the treasurer of the National League of Women Voters and the president of the Illinois state league. She lived in Lake Forest, IL with Frank until his death in 1931, later returning to La Crosse shortly. In the 1940s, she opened the Hixon House to be a Cooperative home for girls attending the La Crosse Vocational School. Alice Green Hixon received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the Western College of Women. In 1962, she donated the Hixon House to the La Crosse County Historical Society, with the final details being completed in 1965. She died in La Crosse on February 11, 1982. |
