David Powell was part Native American specifically Seneca, and he was born in Kentucky. Before coming to La Crosse, he attended Louisville Medical College, and after graduating, he worked as a surgeon in the frontier military. Powell first came to La Crosse in 1881, but it took him a few years to be accepted and recognized due to his race. He helped form the labor movement in La Crosse. Prior to his election, Powell was known in La Crosse as a physician and for his patent medicines. Powell was first elected mayor of La Crosse in 1885, and he would serve four times. Powell was also friends with Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickok. Powell even entering into the gold mining business with Buffalo Bill after leaving La Crosse. |
