Axel Edward Soderberg was born in Gothenburg, Sweden on February 24, 1859. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen, Denmark and also studied art in Paris, France for many years. Before immigrating to the United States, he decorated the ceiling of the summer palace of the Swedish king in Uppsala, Sweden, earning him a reputation in Sweden. In 1892, he went to London, England and secured a commission to decorate a building in the Chicago World's Fair, and by 1893, Soderberg had immigrated to Chicago, IL to work on the Columbian Exhibition. Soderberg soon found employment with the Andrews Decorating Company of Clinton, IA. In 1903, Soderberg was hired as an artist for the Oyen-Ad Sign System and Odin J. Oyen's decorating firm in La Crosse, WI, having been enticed away from the Andrews Decorating Company, a rival company of the Oyen firm. He worked for the Oyen firm until his death from cancer on November 22, 1922. Many of his watercolors still survive in the Oyen collection at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Murphy Library. |
