Notes |
Tollefson was born in Norway in 1853. At the age of 3, Tollefson sailed with his parents to the United States. The family settled in Detroit, Michigan, and later Lansing, Iowa until settling in La Crosse. For a brief time, Tollefson worked at a grocery store before he started his music career at the Bergh Piano Company in the violin department. In 1924, Tollefson left the Bergh Piano Company and opened his music store on the corner of Jay and Fifth Streets making and repairing violins. Throughout his lifetime, he worked with violins for 47 years. Tollefson died in 1938, and his obituary noted that he was the only recognized violin maker in Western Wisconsin upon his retirement in 1936 and that he was rated amongst the leading violin makers of the world. |
