Notes |
American glassmakers began producing black glass bottles in the late 18th century. "The term 'black glass' refers to shades of dark green, dark amber, deep purple, or brown. Often the glass is so dense that the color appears black, the result of impurities in the batch or the density of the ingredients." Iron oxide was the most common way of producing the dark color, as well as strengthening the glass. The dark color lets less light through as well which leads to better preservation of the contents, which were usually alcoholic. Gerth, Ellen C.
