Description |
Triangular-shaped casting that was the end of a wooden box used to hold the seed grain that was to be sown by the implement that was called a drill. A "mirror of the piece was used to form the other end of the box. Two feet at base have holes for screws or bolts. Two holes through the top, and 3 flanges with holes along each side would have served to attach it firmly to the box sides. At the bottom there is a hole 2" across and 1.5" deep that the shaft passed through: small hole in its top was for oiling the rotating part. Cast words on front: "La Crosse Plow Co" and "Imperial Drill." On back is "M157." |

This piece came from the end of a grain drill manufactured by the La Crosse Plow Company. A grain drill was a machine for planting seed at a controlled depth and in specified amounts. |
