Description |
Civil War era Navy enlistedmen's shirt, or tunic. Pull over navy blue wool top. Both machine and hand sewn. Metal buttons painted black on cuffs. Black knotted silk ribbon around collar. Laced-up front of collar. Collar flap has two hand sewn yellow stars on the corners; one on each. There is a hand sewn eagle on the left shoulder. Part of a full uniform. |

Worn by King Holley's great-grandfather John W. Holley who grew up in Lyons, NJ. His father was the attorney general for the state of New York. John went to Hamilton College, the first in his family to do so. He left college to Join the Marines (Navy) during the Civil War. Then he went back and graduated from Hamilton. As the youngest son with no inheritance, John went west. |
