Civil War era Navy enlistedmen's hat. The outside is navy blue wool with inner linings of silk, canvas, and cotton. The top of the hat is divided into six sections with a circular piece in the center. The front of that hat has a simple black silk bow connected to the hat by a white shell button. Part of a full uniform. |

Worn by King Holley's great-grandfather John W. Holley who grew up in Lyons, NJ. His father was the attorney general for the state of New York. John went to Hamilton College, the first in his family to do so. He left college to join the Marines during the Civil War. Then he went back and graduated from Hamilton. As the youngest son with no inheritance, John went west. |
