Description |
Powder horn, made of a cow's horn that has been flattened. Wide end is sealed with a wooden plug nailed in place, Small end is fitted with an iron cap that has been fabricated by hand with horizontal bands for decoration and the tip of the spring that holds the opening closed has a tiny star stamped into it. |

Handwritten note from donor, on deed of gift states: "This horn was used by my grandfather, Gilbert Congdon, who used it in the Civil War. He took out a Homestead in La Crosse County. He married Electa Jane Alexander, who came by ox team form Ohio to marry him. They had four daughters. One of the daughters, Margaret May Congdon married Dr. Thomas Meyers Jewell of Mindoro. They had three daughters: Ruby Florene Jewell, Irma Merle Jewell Bartlett, and Effie Margaret Jewell Grupp." |
