Notes |
Ellen Jane Pennell was born on August 9, 1837 in Honeoye, NY, the daughter of A. R. Pennell. She received a public education in Honeoye and attended boarding school as a young woman. Circa 1860, she came to La Crosse, WI and began working as a school teacher. She met and married lumber baron Gideon Cooley Hixon in 1861, with whom she had five sons: Frank Pennel, Joseph Morris, William Lloyd, George Cooley, and Robert. Ellen was a philanthropist, and established the Home for the Friendless, eventually known as the La Crosse Home for Women and Children and later the La Crosse Home for Children, in 1890. She also helped in large part fund the La Crosse Hospital. In life she was very fond of Grandad Bluff, and when commercial interests sought to turn it into a quarry in 1911, she purchased the bluff and the surrounding forested areas, now known as the Hixon Forest, and donated the land to the city of La Crosse to turn into a park. Ellen died in La Crosse on October 10, 1913 after a long illness. |
