Notes |
Gideon Cooley Hixon was born to Frank Sayre and Electa Cooley Hixon on March 28, 1826 in Roxbury, VT. His family moved to Massachusetts when he was a child, and while living there he received a grammar school education and apprenticed under a tinner. Circa 1850, he married Sarah Crosby in Maine. After Sarah passed away in 1856 after being struck by lightning, Gideon decided to move to La Crosse, WI to work in the lumber industry with his brother-in-law, William W. Crosby. They built their first mill together on the mouth of the Black River, and later Gideon would build another in Hannibal, MO in connection to A. W. Pettibone. He was highly successful in the lumber business, becoming La Crosse's most successful lumber baron. In 1858, he first constructed the historic Hixon House. He remarried in 1861 to Ellen Jane Pennell, and the couple eventually had five sons: Frank Pennell, Joseph Morris, William Lloyd, George Cooley, and Robert. From 1871 to 1872, Gideon served on the Wisconsin State Assembly, and from 1873 to 1874, he served as the 31st district senator in the Wisconsin State Senate. In 1877, he established the La Crosse National Bank, serving as its president for the rest of his life. He was also active in the La Crosse Common Council and La Crosse Board of Education, later serving as president of the Board of Education. Gideon died in La Crosse on September 23, 1892. |
