Mary Higbee graduated from Central High School in 1933. She went on to study at Carleton College, as well as La Crosse State Normal School (now the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse), where she attended the La Crosse State Teachers College Training School. In her mid-20s, Higbee attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, graduating with a degree in costume design. By the time she was 30, she joined the Red Cross and was stationed in the Philippines, awaiting a transfer to Japan. Higbee joined the Red Cross in 1946 after the end of WWII. She served primarily in Japan, where the Allies had begun their occupation. When she returned from Japan, Mary Higbee married Alex B. Cameron, a La Crosse lawyer. She also began teaching art at Logan High School, as well as Coleman Technical Institute in La Crosse and the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. |
